Welcome to the Arson Blog Tour stop at Unabridged Bookshelf!
Thank you very much to AToMR Blog Tours for allowing to participate in this wonderful tour. For the full tour schedule, please click the banner above!

ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Arson
Author: Estevan Vega
Series: Arson #1
Publisher: StoneHouse Ink

ARSON is the first book in a Young Adult Paranormal series. Book two, ASHES, is also available now.

ARSON GABLE FEELS LIKE A FREAK. HE CAN CREATE FIRE. HE NEVER ASKED FOR IT. HE NEVER WANTED IT. BUT HE CAN'T SHUT IT OFF.

Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl--who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin--moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. After years of living in fear, he will be forced to confront his haunting past and embrace the unknown as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Edgy, realistic, and breathtaking, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated teenager with unimaginable ability, is set to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation.

MY REVIEW
Arson by Estevan Vega took me completely by surprise. This story is about the human condition, more than it is about a young boy with the ability to start fires with his mind. This is a story you read, that makes you more appreciative of everything you have. A work of fiction that feels like it could be a real story minus the fire starting. Arson Gable is a young man who thinks he is worthless, because his own grandmother tells him that every day. His grandmother both loves and hates him, and the emotions come out in crazy, often violent, mood swings. Arson has given up living, he is a shell of a person who goes to work, and comes home hoping to avoid his grandmother’s abusive mood swings.

This all changes when he meets Emery Phoenix, the new girl who moves in next door.  Emery is a teenager who wears a Halloween mask to cover her face at all times, just to feel normal. The two outcasts or “freaks” become fast friends. Arson feels like a normal teenage boy when he is around Emery, even though at a single outburst he can create fire from nothing. Emery’s life is not where near perfect, and her parents’ marriage is on it last breath.

The viewpoints alternate during the story, while the story is mainly told from Arson’s perceptive; it does give glimpses into the other characters. Other point-of-views include Emery, Emery’s mother Aimee, Emery’s Father, Joel, and Arson’s Grandmother Kay. The changes in the points of view are really to show how each person is perceived, and then how truly damaged they are as a person on the inside. This just points out how each character is human and flawed, and everyone has personal demons they have to face down. This may seem unnecessary, but it really rounds out the characters and gives the story a bit of human truth.

The story is so beautiful and so dark and tragic at the same time. I am curious where the next book in the series, Ashes, is going to take readers. Arson and Emery are beautifully written characters, from great book.

Waiting on Wednesday: River Road

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.
I am waiting on:

River Road (Sentinels of New Orleans, #2)
Title: River Road
Author: Suzanne Johnson
Series: Sentinels of New Orleans
Publisher: Tor Books
Expected Publication: November 13, 2012

Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.
Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.
It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.

Why am I waiting?
I finished Royal Street, and I loved it!
My review went up yesterday, if you want to check it out!
I love DJ and Alex's partnership
I also love Jean Lafitte, and I cannot wait to read River Road.
and another reason look at the beautiful cover, I really love the colors!

What are you waiting on?
Let me know in the comments or leave me a link!

Book Review: Royal Street by Suzanne Johnson

Royal Street (Sentinels of New Orleans, #1)
Title: Royal Street
Author: Suzanne Johnson
Series: The Sentinels of New Orleans #1
Publisher: Tor Books
Publication Date: April 10, 2012
Number of Pages: 336

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco’s job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.
Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans’ fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters.
While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now, the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering the soldiers sent to help the city recover.
To make it worse, Gerry has gone missing, the wizards’ Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ’s new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and for the serial killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter gumbo.

MY REVIEW
Royal Street by Suzanne Johnson combines so many fantastic elements to create an amazing world, and mythology of which I could not get enough. Drusilla aka DJ Jaco is a wizard who under the guide of her mentor and boss, Gerry helps keep the balance between this world and the world of the beyond. All sorts of creatures live in the beyond werewolves, pixies, vampires, and my personal favorite historical undead. Historical Undead are historical figures that survive, because of their fame. From my understanding, as long as people remember them, they have power. If people begin to forget them, they slowly fade away. In New Orleans, where Royal Street is set, that adds up to some interesting characters, and I sure there are even more to come in future installments.

Royal Street takes place right as Katrina hits New Orleans, and during the devastation DJ’s boss, Gerry, goes missing. With the damages caused to the border between here and the beyond, DJ has not choice The Elders want her back in New Orleans to keep all the creatures and undead at bay, while they try to repair the borders. All DJ wants to do is find Gerry, but with Alex Warin, her newly assigned partner, that is not going to be so easy. Nor is the fact that with the borders down, Jean Lafitte, the historical undead, is going to be coming back to settle a score. To top it off, there is a voodoo serial killer on the loose, with possible ties to the beyond.

DJ is sarcastic and funny, and she may not be a kickass Red Congress (the most powerful) wizard, but she can hold her own, most of the time. I think it is more realistic, because everyone needs a little help sometimes. Alex Warin is not so bad after you get to know him either. He kind of grows on you. My favorite besides DJ has to be Jean Lafitte. He is sexy and dangerous, but also so funny. There is just something about him, and I cannot wait for the next installment where is sounds as if he will probably make an appearance or two. I love how the mythology allows for some amazing historical characters to make an appearance. I think Royal Street is just a wonderful start to a new series, and I cannot wait to see what DJ and Alex have to tackle next.

SIDE NOTE: As someone who does not live near Louisiana and has never been to New Orleans, I cannot possibly understand how devastating Katrina was to the city, or to all the people affected by that storm and the tragedy that followed. I do remember being horrified and heartbroken watching the news reports. The author, Suzanne Johnson, who is from New Orleans manages to capture the devastation of Katrina in her story and really opened my eyes to the extreme destruction and devastation that is still being felt today.

The next installment sounds like it is going to introduce even more creatures and another mystery for DJ and Alex to solve. I really cannot wait, for River Road, which releases in November. I cannot wait to see where Suzanne Johnson is going to take this adventure next.

Book Review: Intangible by J. Meyers

Title: Intangible
Author: J. Meyers
Series: Intangible #1
Publication Date: January 31, 2012

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.
Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it.

MY REVIEW

I received Intangible from the author, J. Meyers, a long while back. After reading it, I seriously regret not being able to get to it sooner. Intangible is so full of unexpected characters, and situations, which is unusual with a book about a psychic. There are many alternating viewpoints throughout the book, I cannot remember off the top of my head how many, but I want to say it is around five. This may be confusing to some readers, but it was not an issue for me. I actually prefer books with alternating viewpoints, simply because it creates a complex and more rounded story.

The two main characters are twin siblings, Sera short for Seraphina, and Luke Raines. They may appear to be normal, but Sera can heal people both from physical and emotional injures or problems. Luke possess his own power too, he can see the future. The story starts out with Luke have a vision of his sister, Sera’s death. Luke is determined to change the future and his vision, even if in all his experience it has never happened. From there the events of the story begin to unfold.

I was delighted in all of little surprises I got while reading, including some not so human characters. Since I want everyone to be delighted with the surprises, and I try to keep my reviews as spoiler free as possible they will stay a secret. There is a lot of mythology, and stage building in the book, but it does not drag down the pace of the story at all. It contributes to setting up the book and giving you glimpses into the world of this series for future installments.

It is not very often anymore, that I take true delight into twists and turns that I did not see coming. Intangible got me on a number of occasions, much to my enjoyment. I really enjoyed the characters, especially the relationship between Luke and Sera. I also love the way that Sera had this need to help people, even if it put herself in danger. I know one thing is for sure, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in this series! This book is well worth every single penny.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: On the Island
Author: Tracey Garvis Graves
Publisher: Plume (Penguin)
Publication Date: July 17, 2012

When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.
T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost seventeen and if having cancer wasn't bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family - and a stack of overdue assignments - instead of his friends.
Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter. Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.'s cancer could return. As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.

When I first read this book, I knew it was one of those books that stick with you. The kind of book you recommend to everyone you meet, and I could not be happier that it is skyrocketing in popularity. I am excited to see it out in stores everywhere. Tracey deserves every bit of success that On The Island has brought her. If you haven't read On The Island yet, please do yourself a favorite pick up a copy!!
Feel free to read my review!

This time around, I have the pleasure of giving everyone a sneak peak at On The Island with an Excerpt!!

The Forsaken (The Forsaken, #1)
Title: Forsaken
Author: Lisa M. Stasse
Series: The Forsaken #1
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Publication Date: July 10, 2012

A thought-provoking and exciting start to a riveting new dystopian trilogy.
As an obedient orphan of the U.N.A. (the super-country that was once Mexico, the U.S., and Canada), Alenna learned at an early age to blend in and be quiet—having your parents taken by the police will do that to a girl. But Alenna can’t help but stand out when she fails a test that all sixteen-year-olds have to take: The test says she has a high capacity for brutal violence, and so she is sent to The Wheel, an island where all would-be criminals end up.
The life expectancy of prisoners on The Wheel is just two years, but with dirty, violent, and chaotic conditions, the time seems a lot longer as Alenna is forced to deal with civil wars for land ownership and machines that snatch kids out of their makeshift homes. Desperate, she and the other prisoners concoct a potentially fatal plan to flee the island. Survival may seem impossible, but Alenna is determined to achieve it anyway.

Technical Difficulties

Earlier today, my faithful laptop was decimated by my lovely little girls.
By that overly dramatic statement, I mean that my laptop screen is a bunch of pretty spidery cracks.
I happen to do 99.9% of my blogging from my laptop.
While I do have what is probably consider an ancient desktop(it is 4 years old), but it is slow and makes me sad to use it.
This is where this message is being brought to you right now.
To try to take the time to lock myself away, and use the desktop is going to harder to do. This goes especially during the day.
I should still post with the same frequency. The biggest delays will be responding to email, and comments in any sort of a timely fashion.

I really hope to be able to replace the laptop screen myself, since the laptop is less than two years old.
Until then please do not be offended if I do not respond to questions, emails and comments right away, it is going to be a bit difficult to do in a timely fashion for the next however many weeks before my beautiful laptop comes back to me.

Thank you for understanding!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we cannot wait to get our hands on.
I am waiting on:

Gravity (The Taking, #1)Title: Gravity
Author: Melissa West
Series: The Taking #1
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Publication Date: October 16, 2012

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.
Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed--arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.
Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

Why am I waiting?
It sounds like a very interesting book!
I like the idea of aliens spies and a mission to save Earth.
There is conflict and I think Ari sounds like she is going to be a strong female lead.
